Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the best stain for a fence?
A. There are two types of stain: water-based and oil-based. Water-based stains perform well on most types of wood, while oil-based stains are best for woods that are prone to bleeding, like cedar and redwood.
Woodluxe® is a breakthrough line of water- and oil-based exterior stains that protect and beautify wood while providing a UV- and mildew-resistant coating for durability. It is available in a wide range of opacities and colors to help you achieve your project goals. Consult the experts at your locally owned Benjamin Moore® store to determine which products are best for your project.
Q. What is the best way to stain a fence?
A. A brush is recommended for staining a fence, but you may also use a roller or pad applicator.
When using a roller to apply stain to a large area, be sure to go back with a brush to work in the stain.
Always start at the top of the fence and work your way down. Horizontal boards should be coated with horizontal strokes, and vertical boards with vertical strokes. Never stop staining in the middle of a board; continue until a natural break is reached.
Q. Do you need to prep a fence before staining?
A. Yes, prepping for any stain project is important and will set your project up for success. Begin by removing any hardware from the fence and making any necessary repairs. Next, sand with medium-grit sandpaper, thoroughly wash, and let dry.
Woodluxe® Prep Products—Wood Restorer, Wood Stain Remover, Wood Brightener & Neutralizer, and All-in-One Wood Cleaner—can speed up preparation. Each product is formulated for specific applications. Your locally owned Benjamin Moore® store can guide you to the right products for your project.
Q. How long does wood fence stain need to dry?
A. Dry time (how long it takes before the stain is dry to the touch and can be returned to service) varies. It is important to consult the label on the can or read the Technical Data Sheet for the product you choose.
Q. Do I need to seal my fence after staining?
A. Not if you use Woodluxe® for your wood staining project. Woodluxe seals and safeguards while beautifying wood. From UV exposure to frost, Woodluxe protects wood under a variety of weather conditions. It also provides a mildew-resistant coating.
In addition to fences, Woodluxe stains can be used to enhance wood siding, decks, porches, and furniture.
