Recruiting and Retaining Painting Talent

According to the Painting Contractors Association’s (PCA) annual member survey, recruiting and retaining employees remains an industry-wide challenge for many business owners. PCA provides several resources to help painting business owners address recruitment and retention.

Ensuring a job posting is listed in the right place makes a big difference when it comes to finding an ideal candidate. The PCA job portal is accessible via the PCA website and allows people from anywhere in the United States to create job listings. Powered by VivaHR, the job board makes it easy to advertise positions and get them distributed to other top job boards from one location. This not only expands the reach of recruitment, but it also makes it much easier for qualified individuals to find you at the local level.

Painter Training Series

Training is a huge part of retaining employees. Once the ideal candidate is found, professional onboarding and a commitment to training is key. From how your company operates to the process behind proper painting techniques, keeping skills sharp is critical to success.

The PCA Painter Training series starts with the fundamentals and is accessible in English and Spanish. The 15-module course gives beginners a thorough grounding on career options, as well as basic skills, tools, and personal safety equipment training.

These painter training modules provide a quick way to onboard and offer continuous training. Each level is beneficial to a professional painter’s development. Look for Interior Levels 1-2 and Exterior Level 1 in both stand alone videos and as formal, online courses complete with quizzes and certificates upon completion.

The PCA Health Benefit Alliance

Offering competitive employee benefits is a key retention tool for many companies. Gaining access to health insurance for crew members, back-office staff, and their families presented challenges in the past. That’s where the Health Benefit Alliance (HBA) helps.

Designed to provide affordable, ACA-compliant health insurance, the PCA’s HBA:
  • Saves on doctor visits
  • Provides low-cost prescription medication
  • Gives access to preventative health services
HBA plan options can be customized to any given company’s needs and are often more cost-effective than those found on the public Healthcare Marketplace.

PCA Industry Standards

The PCA has established Industry Standards to promote transparency and clarity within the painting industry. The Standards address a variety of issues that often lead to misunderstandings or, in extreme cases, contract disputes. They offer clear guidance for both contractors and consumers on how to prevent and resolve such differences effectively.

The PCA Industry Standards:
  • Provide the measure by which the quality of wall coating work can be evaluated by the consumer.
  • Protect the contractor by establishing limits on the extent and verifiable uniformity of a project.
  • Protect the consumer by requiring work that is free from defects, deficiencies and significant variations of coating applications.
  • Save contractors time and money when used and referenced in painting work bids and contracts.
