18. How much paint do I need to buy?

20. Do I need to prime a wall prior to painting it?

Most previously painted, undamaged and untainted walls do not require priming, especially when using a high-quality interior paint. Some special instances, however, require a primer:

  • Adhesion (non-porous or glossy surface)
Bonding primers increase adhesion over an existing glossy finish or a non-porous substrate like paneling.

  • Hide (color change)
Primer (tinted or white) obscures or hides a dark existing color when painting over with a light color or vice versa. Benjamin Moore premium paints (Ben® Interior, Regal® Select Interior, Aura® Interior) deliver a self-priming level of hide that can help achieve most color changes in two coats with no primer.

  • Seal (stain blocking)
Stain-blocking primers suppress stains from smoke, tannins or water. Without a primer, those stains can come through even after painting. Consider priming just the stains (spot-priming) instead of the entire wall.

  • Sheen (enamel holdout)
Alkyd primer, such as Insl-X® Prime Lock Plus, seals varnish or residual adhesive from removed wallpaper for better sheen or enamel holdout.

  • Uniformity (porous surfaces, new drywall)
Primer fills and evens out porous surfaces like new drywall. New drywall should always be primed, because it’s very porous and therefore can absorb moisture, odors, oils or other stains.

21. How long for Benjamin Moore paint to dry?

Each Benjamin Moore product is different, so the official answer is that the amount of time it takes Benjamin Moore paint to dry is "it depends."

Each Benjamin Moore product has a Technical Data Sheet (TDS) which is the best place to look for product-specific paint dry-times.

For a general idea, however, consider the typical drying time of our most popular premium brand:

Regal® Select Interior

  • Dries to the touch: 1 hour
  • Recoat time: 1-2 hours
  • Full cure: 14 days ('curing' is the point where the paint reaches maximum hardness)

Other influences for how long it takes paint to dry:

  • Substrate types: Drywall, brick, wood, metal, vinyl, stone, concrete, ceramic tiles, plastic
  • Environment: Paint takes longer to dry in humid environment, and dries faster in dry ones
  • Waterborne acrylic/latex paints, like Aura® Interior, Regal® Select Interior and Ben® Interior, dry faster. Alkyds, oil-based, and waterborne alkyds, like Advance® Interior paint, generally take longer to dry.

22. Which Benjamin Moore paint is best?

Deciding which Benjamin Moore paint is best depends on your needs as a customer as well as the project. That said, here are three of the best Benjamin Moore interior paints:

  • Aura® Interior paint is Benjamin Moore's ultra-premium paint. Aura Interior offers unparalleled color depth and richness. Aura's Color Lock® technology seamlessly locks pigments into the paint's film, ensuring long-lasting color. Not surprisingly, Aura® Interior is the preferred paint of interior designers.
  • Regal® Select Interior is a time-tested premium interior paint that you can trust to deliver outstanding quality and durability for results that last.
  • Ben® Interior paint elevates your confidence with its easier application, great touch-up qualities, and longer open time, resulting in flawless results and a more effortless painting experience.

23. Which Benjamin Moore exterior paint is best?

Deciding which Benjamin Moore paint is best depends on your needs as a customer as well as the application. Here are five Benjamin Moore exterior paints to consider:

  • Aura® Exterior paint with it's exclusive Color Lock® technology, Aura® Exterior paint provides the ultimate performance for rich, full color and unprecedented durability.
  • Regal® Select Exterior paint resists fading, cracking, and peeling and provides a mildew-resistant coating, even in humid conditions.
  • Regal® Select High Build is a thick, high-build, 100% acrylic formula that bridges small cracks and voids in fewer coats.
  • Element Guard® offers exceptional permeability to withstand wind-driven rain, excessive humidity and other harsh weather conditions on many surfaces, including vinyl siding.
  • Woodluxe® Exterior stain enhances the natural beauty of exterior wood surfaces with a wide variety of opacities and colors. Woodluxe® stain provides superior protection against mildew, UV damage, and other harsh weather conditions.

Product Questions

24. Where can I find Natura® Interior paint?

Starting March 1, 2021, Benjamin Moore is no longer manufacturing Natura® paint. For a premium Benjamin Moore® interior paint that meets or exceeds even the most stringent environmental standards, consider Eco Spec®, our "greenest" paint. Our low-odor offering is zero-VOC and has zero emissions and several third-party environmental certifications.

25. What is Benjamin Moore's greenest paint?

Benjamin Moore remains committed to the planet and to providing paint products that meet or exceed even the most stringent environmental standards. Eco Spec® is our "greenest" paint, offering low odor, zero VOCs, zero emissions and several third-party environmental certifications.

26. Is Benjamin Moore paint good quality?

We think so! Benjamin Moore strives to manufacture the best quality paint on the market and has been North America's favorite paint, color and coatings brand since opening in Brooklyn in 1883.

Benjamin Moore paints excel due to rigorous testing and an unwillingness to compromise on quality. Perfection comes from combining our unique paint formulas with our proprietary Gennex® Color Technology. Together, they work to deliver results that are both stunning and long lasting. Check out this profile of our paint color testing facility here!

27. Is Benjamin Moore paint oil-based or latex?

Both! Benjamin Moore offers paint in several formulas, including:

  • Latex or acrylic—water-based paint
  • Alkyd—oil-based paint
  • Specialtywaterborne alkyd (includes alkyd properties with soap and water cleanup)

Each painting project is different. Consult with the staff at your independently owned Benjamin Moore retailer—they can help you choose the right product for your next DIY project!

28. What is Gennex® Color Technology?

Gennex® Color Technology is the reason that you cannot “match” Benjamin Moore® color in another paint brand. Why? Because the combination of Benjamin Moore’s proprietary Gennex® waterborne colorant with Benjamin Moore paint creates an end-result that simply cannot be replicated.

Most common paint colorants require the addition of certain chemicals so that they can easily mix into any number of paints—chemicals that ultimately weaken them. Proprietary Gennex Color Technology is engineered specifically by Benjamin Moore, for Benjamin Moore paints. The result is the premium paint that makes Benjamin Moore synonymous with quality.

Aura® Interior paint, Aura® Exterior paint, Eco Spec® Interior paint, Regal® Select Interior paint, Regal® Select Exterior paint, Ben® Interior paint, Element Guard® Exterior paint and many others are engineered with the “science” behind Benjamin Moore quality: Learn more about Gennex® Color Technology.

29. What is Color Lock®?

Benjamin Moore’s proprietary Color Lock® technology is exclusive to premium Aura® Interior paint and Aura® Exterior paint. Thanks to Color Lock®, color pigments are locked into the paint film, so color doesn’t fade, even after repeated washings. Benefits of Aura® with Color Lock® technology include:

  • Covers walls more completely so you can use less paint
  • Unprecedented durability and no color rub-off, even after repeated washings
  • Extreme hide to cover dark colors and imperfections
  • Uniquely smooth finish

In addition to Aura® Interior and Exterior paints, Color Lock® enhances Color Stories®, a sophisticated collection of 240 colors that exhibit an accentuated response to different lighting conditions.

30. Does Benjamin Moore Regal® paint have primer in it?

Benjamin Moore describes many of its paint products, including Regal® Select, as "self-priming" or "paint and primer in one." These statements are shorthand used by the coatings industry to describe paints that provide exceptional performance—hide and adhesion, for example—in fewer coats over properly prepared surfaces.

In other words, using Regal Select Interior, Regal Select Exterior, Regal Select Exterior High Build or other Benjamin Moore premium products under those ideal circumstances may not require a separate primer. Some painting projects, however, include unique challenges and may require a primer with specific properties, regardless of product choice. Every project is different, so we encourage consulting your local Benjamin Moore retailer for advice.

31. Does Benjamin Moore sell chalk paint?

Yes! Insl-X® Chalkboard paint lets you transform any surface into a chalkboard.

You can paint over your current paint color or "start fresh" on an unpainted surface--it's up to you! Contact your local, independently owned Benjamin Moore retailer to get started.

32. Does Benjamin Moore sell quarts?

Yes. Most Benjamin Moore paints and stains—including all premium products—are available in one-gallon cans, five-gallon pails and one-quart containers. Contact your local Benjamin Moore retailer for more information, and check out the Benjamin Moore Online Store where select products are available in quarts.

33. What is the best Benjamin Moore exterior paint?

Benjamin Moore offers a wide range of high-quality exterior paints, each one engineered to address unique challenges, including withstanding harsh weather, adhering to different surfaces, applying the paint under varying climate conditions, and much more. Your local Benjamin Moore retailer can help you determine which exterior paint is best for your project.

Visit our product catalog to learn more about Benjamin Moore exterior paints, including Aura® Exterior paint, Regal® Select Exterior paint, Regal® Select High Build Exterior paint, Element Guard® Exterior paint and more. And check out which exterior paints that you can buy online, and pick up at your local retailer, to save time.

34. How long does Benjamin Moore paint last?

Benjamin Moore formulates premium paints to offer extended service life—in other words, for years. However, paint longevity and durability depends on several factors, including surface type, product and sheen choice, wear and tear, and of course accidents and catastrophes. Application techniques affects a paint's longevity and is one of many reasons we recommend hiring a pro painter; your local Benjamin Moore retailer can help you find painters in your area.

Benjamin Moore backs many of our paint products with limited lifetime warranties as well as our standard satifaction warranty. Check the paint can label for more information, and be sure to talk to your local Benjamin Moore retailer.

Wondering how long paint lasts in a can? Paint sitting in the can last several years but only under ideal circumstances: uncontaminated paint, proper sealing, full container with little airspace, and cool, dry storage. Learn more about how to store paint properly. In general, Benjamin Moore does not recommend storing paint for years. Instead, make every effort to purchase the correct amount for the job by using our paint calculator.

Color Sample Questions

35. Are Benjamin Moore Color Samples real paint?

The liquid in our 8 oz. color sample is real paint, however it does not contain the performance enhancing components found in our regular paints. Since we do not test sample paint for long term performance, the colors may shift or fade sooner than expected.

Benjamin Moore Color Samples are for interior paint color representation only. They exist for a sole purpose: Helping you confidently choose a paint color you will love.

We recommend:

  • Only use Benjamin Moore Color Samples for testing what paint colors look like in your interior space.
  • When you are ready to paint be sure to paint over the color sample: Do not use the sample paint as a "final" wall paint.
Want to learn more about why testing paint color is so important? Check out our video on lighting conditions. And use this guide to help narrow down the color family you are thinking about.

36. Why can't I paint with your paint samples?

We advise against using our liquid paint sample for anything other than testing color. Benjamin Moore Color Samples are for interior paint color representation only.

Even though the liquid in our 8 oz. sample jar is real paint, it does not contain the performance enhancing components found in our regular paints. Since we do not test sample paint for long term performance, the colors may shift or fade sooner than expected.

Want to learn more about why testing paint color is so important? Check out our video on lighting conditions. And use this guide to help narrow down the color family you are thinking about.

37. What sheens are Benjamin Moore Color Samples?

All Benjamin Moore Paint Color Samples contain eight ounces of actual Benjamin Moore premium interior paint in an eggshell sheen. When you're done sampling, check out our guide to choosing a paint finish to help decide what sheen is right for your project. Check out our How to Sample Paint Colors for more information on all our color sample options.

38. Where can I get a Benjamin Moore color consultation?

Many independently owned Benjamin Moore retailers offer color consulting, either virtually or in person. Find a retailer to inquire about your local store's color consulting services.

Take advantage of Benjamin Moore's extensive library of Color Tools. Bring home Color Samples to help you observe color at home in different lighting conditions (natural and artificial), and download the free Benjamin Moore Color Portfolio® app to tap into the power of the photo and video visualizers, both of which let you try on colors using your phone's camera.

39. Does Benjamin Moore sell Peel & Stick paint color samples?

Yes! Reusable, Peel & Stick paint color samples are available on the Benjamin Moore Online Store. Coated with real Benjamin Moore® paint, these Peel & Stick color samples are self-adhesive and easy to apply.

Peel & Stick samples are produced by Samplize, using Benjamin Moore paint. Applied paint may vary from the Peel & Stick sample, based on product, sheen and lighting changes. Recommended use is for interior paint color sampling.

40. Where can I buy paint samples, color swatches and Peel & Stick paint color samples?

You can purchase Benjamin Moore Paint Color Samples at your local Benjamin Moore retailer, or you can order them from the Benjamin Moore Online Store and either pick them up in-store, or have them shipped.

You can purchase 4"x8" color swatches and Peel & Stick color samples from the Benjamin Moore Online Store.

41. What is the difference between a Benjamin Moore Paint Color Sample, a color swatch and a Peel & Stick sample?

Benjamin Moore Paint Color Samples contain eight ounces of actual Benjamin Moore premium paint, tinted in easy-to-use, screw-top jars. Samples hold enough interior, eggshell-finish paint to brush out an approximate 2'x2' area. They are available at your local Benjamin Moore retailer or the Benjamin Moore Online Store.

Color swatches are 4"x8" paper representations of Benjamin Moore colors in an eggshell finish. Swatches let you test colors without painting. Color swatches are a good choice when trying to decide between many colors at one time. Use low-adhesive painter’s tape to tape them to your wall (note that color swatches are not Peel & Stick), observe them in different lighting conditions, and compare colors against each other. Swatches are available online only.

Peel & Stick samples are flexible, adhesive-backed, single-color sheets coated with actual Benjamin Moore® interior paint in an eggshell finish. Peel & Stick paint samples can be reapplied, letting you move color samples from room to room, and observe in different lighting throughout your space. Peel & Stick samples are available online.

All three of these sample types ship from different locations, so they may arrive at different times. There is an order maximum of 10 4"x8" color swatches per customer. Benjamin Moore Paint Color Samples and color swatches are final sale and not eligible for refunds. Learn more about our color samples and get tips on how to use them to find your perfect paint color.

42. Do you sell samples of exterior stain?

Yes. Similar to Benjamin Moore Paint Color Samples, samples of Woodluxe® Exterior Stain are available in a variety of colors and opacities. You can purchase a full assortment at your local Benjamin Moore retailer or solid opacity only from the Benjamin Moore Online Store. Note: Woodluxe solid opacity offers all 3,500-plus Benjamin Moore colors.

Virtual Color Consultation Questions

71. Does Benjamin Moore offer color consultations?

Yes! Let our experts help you find the perfect color for your paint project with a Benjamin Moore virtual color consultation. From helping you narrow down your paint selection to creating a cohesive color palette for your space, our color & design experts are here to offer you top-tier guidance for bringing confident color into your space. All color consultations include one (1) consultation with a Benjamin Moore Color & Design expert; up to three (3) color schemes; and five (5) to eight (8) 4”x8” Color Swatch samples, depending on your type of consultation. Swatches will be mailed to your home upon completion of your consultation. Please note that color consultations are currently for US residents only.

72. What is color consultation?

A color consultation is a discussion between a homeowner and a color consultant where interior or exterior paint color goals are discussed, and options are suggested to achieve these goals. The color consultation is apt to include talking points such as the desired mood or style, concerns centering on colors that will, or will not, work for the project, and considerations such as coordinating color with existing elements. Many times, color consultations take place in person, however we are offering virtual color consultations for added convenience. Benjamin Moore hosts our color consultations via a Zoom link sent to your email after you book your appointment.

73. How much does a color consultation cost?

Benjamin Moore color consultations cost $50 for one interior color consultation, and $60 for one exterior color consultation, payable via PayPal. After the consultation, an email will be sent with a recap of the conversation. Additionally, between five (5) (for interior projects) and eight (8) (for exterior projects) color swatches in your choice of colors will be mailed to you via USPS.

74. What is the difference between a color consultant and an interior designer?

A color consultation is focused specifically on the colors to be painted on the walls, ceiling, trim, and possibly the cabinetry/millwork in a space. An interior designer has a larger scope of work that may include selecting fabrics, furnishings, window treatments, hardware, floor plan changes, and/or hard materials such as tile/wood/stone, etc.

75. What can I expect from my color consultation?

During your color consultation, your Color & Design consultant will complete pre-work based on the information provided when the appointment is made. This will allow the consultant time to bring ideas together to make the most of the session. During the session, the color consultant will kick off the appointment with a discussion on the space itself, existing elements (furniture, flooring, etc.), and the color goals. The consultant will then share the initial ideas pulled together in advance of the meeting to gather more information on what appeals to the homeowner (or what misses the mark). From there, more colors will be discussed, with the goal of ending the call with three (3) color scheme options that meet the project goals and the color preferences of the homeowner. After the consultation, an email will be sent with a recap of the conversation, and a full color report. Additionally, five (5) (for interior projects) and eight (8) (for exterior projects) color swatches in your choice of color will be mailed to you via USPS.

76. I’m not happy with my consultation—what are my next steps?

You remain responsible for selecting a paint, color and finish that suits your project and for its proper application. The consultation is intended to help you visualize how a color and finish may appear on your project but are not a guarantee of how paint will look once applied nor are they a guarantee of the suitability of any paint for your intended usage. On-screen and printer color may vary from actual paint colors. Further, the actual appearance of applied paint may vary on a number of factors, such as how the paint is applied, lighting, the surface being painted, angle of sight and so on.

Our goal is to help you make confident color decisions. If you are not satisfied with your color consultation, please contact us at VirtualColor@benjaminmoore.com with details on where the color consultation did not meet your level of satisfaction as soon as possible.

77. What is your cancellation policy?

Consultations must be cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment to be eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made after the 48-hour mark are subject to a 50% service fee, with a 50% refund.

78. What is your rescheduling policy?

Appointments can be rescheduled without penalty up to 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time. Due to scheduling availability and respect to our color consultants, rescheduling appointments is not available within 48 hours of your scheduled appointment.

79. What is your “no show” policy?

While we understand that emergencies happen, our color consultants spend hours of their time preparing for virtual consultations. Clients who “no show” on their appointments without notice will be charged the full consultation fee with no rescheduling option.

80. Who are Benjamin Moore color consultants?

All Benjamin Moore Color & Design experts, also known as our color consultants, have experience in various design disciplines, in addition to extensive experience working with the Benjamin Moore color collections. Our consultants contribute regularly to various media outlets, training opportunities and other venues where color guidance and expertise are desired.

81. Why do you need images of my space?

Photos are the best way for us to understand your space and provide colored renderings so you can preview the finished look. By getting a feel for the space and the existing elements, our consultants will be able to understand the lighting and other factors that have a substantial effect on color selection. These details will help in reaching color selections that are right for the space, while helping customers move closer to making color decisions.

82. Why do I need to fill out a form? Won’t I be able to give my consultant information about my project during our session?

You’ll likely discuss some of the information included on your consultation form with our consultant, but prior to the appointment your consultant will spend time evaluating colors that will work in your home. By doing pre-work based on the answers shared on the questionnaire, your consultation will be focused on colors that are apt to work in your home, bringing you closer to a color decision. The more detail that can be provided, the better.

83. Can I go to a retailer for this service?

Many Benjamin Moore retailers offer color consulting services in-store and are happy to arrange a face-to-face meeting. Our program is a virtual option that provides access to a Color & Design expert when getting to a store is not possible, or when a virtual meeting is preferable.

84. Are you affiliated with specific Benjamin Moore retailers?

This program is not affiliated with a specific retailer, however as part of your post-consultation package you will receive information on the name and location of the closest Benjamin Moore retailers to you.

85. How do I contact my consultant after our meeting?

After the color consultation, your consultant will reach out with an email recap of the meeting, so you have a record of which colors were discussed during the appointment. After the consultation, you will receive five (5) (for interior projects) and eight (8) (for exterior projects) color swatches in your choice of colors will be mailed to you via USPS.

86. Can I choose an in-person meeting? Can I have a consultant come to my home?

Our color consultations are strictly virtual. If you prefer an in-person meeting, we suggest reaching out to a local Benjamin Moore independent retailer to see if they offer in-home color consulting services.

87. Do you recommend products?

We provide general information on suggested products with links to excellent product information resources on benjaminmoore.com. If there are specific substrates that require specialty products, please include that information in your appointment questionnaire.

88. I did a consult for one room—now I want to do the rest of the house. Can I get a discount?

Currently, our consultations are for a single space, and we are not offering discounts for additional rooms. Should our team decide to add whole-home or multiple-room consultations to our services, we will email past clients to let them know.

89. How many color swatches will I receive?

Customers will receive between five (5) (for interior projects) and eight (8) (for exterior projects) complimentary swatches measuring 4” x 8” after the color consultation (up to a $20.00 value, $2.50 per sample). The swatches will arrive via USPS and a tracking number will be sent once the samples are shipped.

90. I would rather buy wet samples—can I get a discount?

Our half pint samples are available online or in-store at a local Benjamin Moore retailer. At various points in the year we have promotional offers, however we are not offering discounts directly tied to the Virtual Color Consulting program at this time.

91. I was happy with my initial color consult, but I do not like the colors in my space. Can I get a rebate?

Unfortunately, we do not offer rebates or refunds if a customer does not like the color they selected. During the color consultation the consultant will offer three options for your space, leaving the final decision to the customer. To make sure you’ve selected a color you love, we encourage you to sample your colors before you paint with them. Benjamin Moore offers a range of paint samples so you can eliminate the stress of wrong choices, and instead focus on the transformative power that a fresh coat of color brings to your home.

92. What is the best way to take a photo for my color consultation?

High quality, high-resolution photos are the best choice for your consultation. Phone cameras are acceptable, so long as they provide photos at 72dpi. Aim for 1250 pixels in width or height—the bigger the image, the better the rendering.

Ensure the room has good lighting, with natural lighting preferred. The room should be clean and clear from distraction, but leave the items that will stay in the room, such as artwork, window treatments, and rugs. Try to capture the overall room, showing floor to ceiling when possible—landscape photos generally work better than portrait shots.

If you cannot capture the full room, provide multiple photos capturing different areas of the room. Should you add on a digital color rendering to your appointment, we will select the photo that works best.

93. How can I obtain a digital rendering of my space?

For an even better color consultation experience, we offer an optional image rendering service, which can be added to your consultation for an additional $30. This includes a virtual rendering of your space featuring the color schemes discussed with your Benjamin Moore color consultant. To add an image rendering to your consultation, please check the “Image Rendering” add-on box at the time of scheduling. A photo of your space is REQUIRED for a rendering. If you choose to add a rendering to your Virtual Color Consultation, you will receive one (1) photo rendered in the three (3) different color schemes discussed during your call. Image renderings are sent via email 5-7 business days after the consultation.

94. Can I get an additional rendering after the consultation?

Clients are limited to one (1) $30 add-on rendering per appointment, however clients may ask for one (1) round of revision with three (3) additional color schemes for an additional $30 service fee. The revisions must use the same image from the initial rendering. Clients may specify exact colors, ask our experts to come up with more color schemes or a combination of both. If you’d like to see other colors in your space, Benjamin Moore offers the Color a Room tool, where customers can upload an image, mask the surfaces to be painted, and drop in paint colors for consideration. We also offer the Benjamin Moore Color Portfolio® app, which lets you apply paint color to photos of your space, access fan decks, match favorite hues to Benjamin Moore colors and more.

95. Can I get extra swatches?

Color consultation packages include between five (5) (for interior projects) and eight (8) (for exterior projects) color swatches. Additional color samples, including swatch and peel & stick formats, are available for purchase in all colors via our online store.

96: Can I get additional help after my scheduled consultation?

We understand some renovation projects take longer than others. While we will try our best to accommodate your needs, we consider projects closed after six (6) months from your original appointment. Additional help will require another consultation.
