Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is Insl-X® Sure Step®?
A. Insl-X® Sure Step® provides a durable, skid-resistant finish for interior or exterior application. It offers excellent colour retention, abrasion resistance, and resistance to ponding water. Sure Step is water-reduced, which allows for fast-drying, easy application, and easy clean up.
Q. What kind of primer would I need with Insl-X® Sure Step®?
A. Insl-X® Sure Step® is self-priming on bare concrete, bare asphalt and previously coated surfaces in good condition. Surfaces that will require priming include:
- Uncoated wood will require a primer formulated for walking surfaces. Wood with tannin staining may require an oil-based primer.
- Uncoated metal will require a metal primer, such as Super Spec® HP Primer.
- Previously coated metal calls for spot priming with a metal primer if any bare metal is exposed or corrosion is beginning to form.
Q. Where can I buy Insl-X® Sure Step®?
A. You can purchase Insl-X® Sure Step® paint at your locally owned Benjamin Moore store—if they don’t carry it, they can order it for you.
Q. How does Insl-X® Sure Step® work?
A. Insl-X® Sure Step® uses an aggregate as part of the paint formulation to provide a durable, skid-resistant finish on interior and exterior surfaces. This anti-slip coating is water reduced, which allows it to dry fast. It also has an easy application and clean-up.
This durable coating is resistant to ponding water, fills and seals minor surface cracks, and has excellent colour retention.
Q. Where can Insl-X® Sure Step® be used?
A. Insl-X® Sure Step® can be used on walking surfaces such as tennis courts, patios, walkways, pool decks, and other areas subjected to foot traffic.
However, you should not apply Sure Step on garage floors or surfaces that will be driven on.
Q. What are the benefits of using Insl-X® Sure Step®?
A. Insl-X® Sure Step® is a skid-resistant finish ideal for surfaces subjected to heavy foot traffic. It is designed to help reduce slips and falls by providing a painted surface with some grip to it.
This durable coating is resistant to ponding water, fills and seals minor surface cracks, and is ready for light foot traffic only 24 hours after application of the final coat (and ready 4-5 days after final application for heavy foot traffic).
It also has exceptional colour retention and is abrasion-resistant. Use Sure Step as a coating for concrete, metal, asphalt, and more substrates.
Q. How do I apply Insl-X® Sure Step®?
A. Insl-X® Sure Step® may be easily applied by roller, brush or squeegee. Stir contents thoroughly to ensure even dispersion of pigment. Apply product at a rate of 7.4 to 11.1 sq. m. (80 to 120 sq. ft.) per 3.79 L can. May be recoated in 8 hours under good drying conditions. Two coats of Sure Step are required for proper performance.
Do not apply if rain or weather conditions are threatening and late in the afternoon when there is a threat of moisture condensing on wet paint. Apply when the surface and ambient temperature are above 12.8 °C (55°F) and below 32 °C (90°F). Do not paint if surface temperature is within 5 degrees of the dew point. If Sure Step sets too quickly (application on a hot, dry day) it may be advisable to thin it with water or pre-wet the surface with a hose.
If applying Sure Step with a brush, limit it to small areas such as steps or trimming out the edges of larger areas before using a squeegee or roller.
Q. Is Insl-X® Sure Step® safe to use?
A. When applying Insl-X® Sure Step®, you should avoid breathing in vapours, spray mists or sanding dusts. To prevent this, we recommend wearing a protective mask and/or goggles. Areas should be sufficiently ventilated when applying.
You should avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing when using Sure Step.
Before applying Insl-X Sure Step, be sure to thoroughly read the Safety Data Sheet.
Q. How long does Insl-X® Sure Step® take to dry?
A. The dry time for Insl-X® Sure Step® at 25°C (77°F) at 50% RH (Relative Humidity) is 1 to 2 hours for a tack-free first coat and 8 hours to recoat. Sure Step needs 24 hours after the second and final coat before it is ready for light foot traffic, and 4 to 5 days before this floor coating is ready for heavy foot traffic.
High humidity and cool temperatures will result in longer dry, recoat and service times.
